Phased was commissioned to expand the solo trumpet repertoire for advanced students, providing targeted educational opportunities to refine tone control, intonation, dynamic range, and mastery of the whole-tone scale. To mirror the effect of audio phasing, the composition incorporates creative mute techniques alongside a dynamic tonality that fluidly shifts between whole-tone and minor structures.
