Skeleton Scherzo
Concert Band - GRADE 3
Skeleton Scherzo is a spirited, macabre romp designed to showcase the rhythmic precision and tonal colors of the young concert band. Set in c minor, the piece captures the image of a midnight ballroom where the party-goers are a bit more... "bony" than usual.
The piece opens with a skeletal melody introduced by the xylophone, clarinets, trumpets, and flutes, quickly joined by the warmer textures of the altos and horns. This initial gathering leads to a mischievous, exposed statement of a second theme featuring the clarinets and muted trumpets. The energy shifts as the low brass enter the ballroom with a heavier, more pompous sound—perhaps because these skeletons have "thicker bones"—they provide a grounded contrast to the flighty woodwinds. Throughout the dance, the snare drum keeps the skeletons on their toes with tricky syncopated rhythms. The piece reaches its climactic conclusion as every musician joins the fray for the final, grand movement of the ball.
